Michael McStay is an actor, writer, director and musician. Before studying at NIDA, Michael acted around his home town of Melbourne, appearing in plays such as Michael Gow's 'Away', Alan Bennett's 'The History Boys' and the original Australian works 'Daisy Chain' and 'Webley & Huxley Live The Life'. He appeared in numerous short films in association with the VCA Film & Television Course, satiating another great passion - that of film and its craft.
Michael is an avid reader and writer, which has led to his compulsion to create original work in appreciation for the literary canon and willingness to be part of it. This has already led to a creative development in association with the NIDA Independent Program of an epic play Michael wrote during his time at NIDA. He is currently writing a novel.
In 2013, Michael wrote, directed and composed the work 'Esther' for the NIDA Student Festival, based on the Old Testament book of the same name.
As a musician, Michael has achieved his AMEB Grade Eight Certificate in Piano and Grade Five Certificate in Music Theory. He also plays guitar, sings and composes.
