Aki Sato-Johnson is a Japanese-American performer and theatre maker whose work fuses the physical precision of a trained dancer with the vocal and emotional expressiveness of an actor. For 17 years, she was a core member of the internationally renowned Suzuki Company of Toga (SCOT), performing leading roles including Renée in Madame de Sade, Electra in Electra, Andromache in The Trojan Women, and the Rabbit in Kachi Kachi Yama. Other major roles include the Mean Sister and Fake Prince in Cinderella, Nurse Monroe in Shrinking Japan Rises Again, Chrysothemis in Electra, the Maenad in Dionysus, and the finale performer in Greetings from the Edge of the Earth II. Her portrayal of Renée in the 2022 Tokyo revival of Madame de Sade at Kichijoji Theatre earned her the Teatro Theatre Magazine Award for Exceptional Performance.
With SCOT, Aki toured to more than 28 cities across 17 countries, appearing at major international festivals such as the Theatre Olympics (Budapest, St. Petersburg–Toga, Wrocław, Beijing, and Seoul), the Edinburgh International Festival, the Jerzy Grotowski Theatre Festival, the Singapore Arts Festival, Napoli Teatro Festival Italia, the Istanbul International Theatre Festival, the Seoul Performing Arts Festival, and the Shanghai International Arts Festival, among others.
An experienced teacher of the Suzuki Method of Actor Training, Aki has led workshops at the biannual Suzuki Toga Camp and taught internationally in Vladivostok, Jakarta, and Bali. She holds a BFA in Acting with a minor in Dance from Ithaca College, New York, and trained in classical ballet from an early age.
Now based in Boorloo (Perth), Aki is expanding her practice into devising, directing, and the development of her own physical theatre training method, while continuing her work as a performer. She made her Australian debut as a deviser and performer in Passports, directed by Sam Bruce. Most recently, she co-founded CENTA co. Physical Theatre with Sam Bruce and Steph Pick. Together, they facilitate weekly physical training for performers in the Boorloo region and are developing new works that aim to challenge minds, move hearts, and transform audiences’ lives.
