Hello, thank you for reading this extra little bit about me. My preferred name is Zule, pronounced like Julie with a Z.
I have difficulty being able to tell people my ethnicity and race as my father was a child of war, he began work at the age of 5 and there is very little we know, even of his age - he never had a birth certificate. So the best way to describe my background is that I am black and white, my father had very dark skin and was from a NESB, he was poly-lingual and spoke over 10 different languages including English fluently in his later life. He was a very special international man of mystery, but unfortunately there is no box for him or for me to tick on this.
Most folk thought he and I were Aboriginal growing up. We were treated / mistreated as such by the community, and I had many indigenous friends. They were very much part of my chosen family and who I identified with as a young person because I knew no-one else who looked like me. Today, I cannot claim to be Aboriginal nor Torres Strait Islander because I simply do not know. I am mixed race Australian and I have a face that covers many backgrounds and ethnicities.
Thanks for taking the time to read and understand that for some of us, being a BIPOC person is not as simple as ticking a box provided on this website. And humbly, we do not all want to do a DNA test in which to be able to do so. My family created our own culture because one did not exist for us beforehand.
Best wishes and kind regards, Zule
